قصة الفيلم
قصة حزينة للوايف، جيلسومينا، التي باعتها والدتها إلى زامبانو مقابل 10000 ليرة وبضعة كيلوغرامات من الطعام. زامبانو هو رجل استعراض متجول يُظهر أعمال القوة عن طريق كسر سلسلة ملفوفة حول صدره. وهو يؤدي العروض في ساحات القرية ثم يمرر القبعة لأي شيء يكون الحشد الصغير عادة على استعداد لتقديمه.يقوم بتعليم جيلسومينا قرع الطبول كجزء من مقدمته.لا يعاملها بشكل جيد وعندما تحاول الهرب، يضربها. ينضمون في النهاية إلى سيرك متنقل صغير حيث يلتقون بمشاة حبل مشدودة تقنع جيلسومينا بالتشكيك في اختياراتها
